At this time of lock-down, many believers feel that the Church has taken a giant step backwards as they cannot hold big meetings or evangelical campaigns. Interestingly enough, a similar situation existed from Christ’s trial and crucifixion until the Day of Pentecost. John 20:19 tells us that even after Christ’s resurrection, “…the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders.” But afterwards, having witnessing the Lord Jesus being taken up into heaven, 120 believers, united in prayer, were gathered in an upper room. Nothing happened until the day of Pentecost. It was then that a sovereign act of the Holy Spirit, would fill and empower them all so greatly, that crowds began to gather to see what the commotion was about. They testified: “These people (in the upper room) are all from Galilee, and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages!” It was then that Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and delivered a message that resulted in the conversion of 3000 people that day (Acts 1&2 (NLT). This was the same Peter who had refused to step forward when his Galilean accent raised suspicions of Him being a disciple of Jesus. He had denied the Lord then, but now was a different man. God’s blessing of the Holy Spirit had moved him and the others to step forward for Jesus and God had only just begun to act.
Verses 42 onwards tells us what that stepping forward entails – for it was far more than just preaching. A deep sense of awe had come over all of them, and they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship. They met in their tiny homes to share in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to pray. The believers performed many miraculous signs and wonders while everyone praised God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. Each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved. The ball had finally begun to role in a Church which, up to then, had always enjoyed the Lord Jesus stepping forward for them. Now he had passed the mandate on to them with an empowering that proved irresistible. We need to make sure that a sovereign act of the Holy Spirit fills and empowers us, lest we go forward in our own strength. When God then begins to work in us, we need to stand up for Jesus in testimony, in awe, in devotion and in love. Will you emerge from this lock-down with a new commissioning from God or be the same person who went into it? The choice is yours.
